White Pants in Winter?!?!

So, full disclosure, I do NOT wear white pants to go drop off and pick up my kids from school. I think at this time of year I would be considered a CRAZY person if I did that. I do, however, feel that white in winter is totally doable! If you're a person who works outside the home, have a event to go to, or are out on the town, white is a cool and refreshing look during the winter months.

Let's start with which white pants you can bust out in the colder months. First off the material needs to be of a 'winter' weight, this means that denim, twill, or wool are a go and lightweight cotton and linen are obviously not. I have a straight leg and wide leg crop pair that I will be styling for your enjoyment.

The first step to making white winter appropriate is to wear tonal colours — anything cream, beige, tan, caramel or ecru are great options. I like to keep my coat in the same tones as well and I've had a wool number from J.Crew for 5 years that has served me well. This one is very similar and is on super sale. In this first look I have paired straight leg jeans with a lightweight tucked in oatmeal turtleneck sweater. Paired with my suede booties this look is both casual and sophisticated. If you are feeling brave you can wear a pair of nude or tan kitten heels to give it more of a special evening feel.

Next look, also with the straight leg jeans, is with an oversize chunky knit cardigan and ankle booties. These suede booties are back and take this in a more casual way. Sometimes all it takes to make an outfit more interesting is the tuck you do for your topper, here I have fully tucked in the white t-shirt underneath and the cardigan has been done-up and french tucked (that's the little half tuck in the front). This plays with the oversize chunky proportions of the sweater and the streamlined pant. Another thing to consider when dressing tonally is to have as much texture in your outfit as possible. Here I have mixed structured denim with a chunky oversized knit and soft supple suede and they all play well with each other.

Next I've styled my wide leg crop denim with a cozy mock turtleneck sweater. This sweater is a medium weight and the neck is only slightly rolled to create a little interest around my face. This is obviously the 'inside" version of this look as no one is venturing outside in mules in the snow unless they are a psychopath. The wide leg and roomy sweater could be a very sloppy look had I not tucked the front into the waistband. If you find you have a lot of sweater to stuff down your jeans and you're not enjoying the bunchy gut, you can still achieve this tucked look by folding the bottom of your shirt under and gently pinning it up and then only tucking the bottom part into the waistband. I even dug out my bone circle bag from the depths of my summer bags and I think this monochromatic look is very chic while still being hella comfy and warm.

Finally I thought I would break my own rules and show you how white denim can be rocked with a toque and denim jacket/ shirt during the winter months and no one will question your sanity. I have on a very reasonable tan leather bootie paired with this AWESOME denim shirt jacket. I feel like I could venture out with my kids with my puffy jacket over this and look pretty hip (well, at least until one of my numerous kids jumped in a slush puddle).

So there you have it. Break those fashion "rules" and wear those white pants in the winter and transition your winter wardrobe into spring with these easy ideas. Dig out those pants from your closet, or attic storage, and see if you can rock the look this winter. I guarantee someone will comment on how cool, courageous and trendy you look and you did it with something you already had and that you were too afraid to bust out. Tag your look with #letsgetstylishwithrobin and share your bravery with the world.
