Chuck on All the Layers....It's Freakin' Cold Out!

Updated: Feb 17, 2020

I know this is probably too little too late as winter is supposed to be done in like 4 weeks (yeah right). Let's talk about how to layer to keep warm, keep your options open, and keep from looking like a giant marshmallow.

During the winter I like to wear layers as I tend to be a little chilly when I'm not doing anything at home, which basically never happens. I also like the option of removing layers when I get moving and start the inevitable sweating that happens in a woman of a certain age. I apologize in advance for these crappy photos but I'm working here all by my lonesome and have not figured out technology or gotten proper equipment.

Ok, so layering. I like to start with a good base layer in the winter. Most people have a silky undershirt/tank top in their wardrobe to put as a base for all items of clothing to go over in the winter. It's great for stopping drafts as well as helping your clothing lay nicer as it allows it to skim over any lumps or bumps. I have these ones and they are a good price, wash up well and don't give you the uniboob look of many tanks.

Another good base layer option to add to your closet is a lightweight ribbed turtleneck. I think grey, white/cream, and grey/navy and white stripe are the most versatile. I stear clear of black as I often feel like I'm a 1950's beatnik at a cool jazz club. Either that or I look like that picture of Dwayne Johnson wearing a black turtleneck and fanny pack circa early 1990's. However, if this is the vibe you are going for then knock yourself out and wave that beatnik flag!

Long sleeve crew neck t-shirts are a great choice also, as they can layer under sweaters and button ups without being bulky.

There is always the option of a chambray or oxford button up as a top layer or for layering under a heavier sweater. I like to have my button-ups a little oversized so they peek out from under the sweater to give extra interest to an outfit.

Finally we have the top layers to discuss. The obvious choice is a crew or v-neck sweater. These toppers can be lightweight cotton, cashmere or merino wool, or they can be heavier wool, or acrylic. Keep in mind that when layering it's acceptable, if not preferable, to show whatever you are layering under. So pull down those under sleeves (that's a thing now) and roll up your topper to show off those forearms!

Finally there is the question of where to put your jewelry (if you wear any at all). I am a big fan of lots of rings, bracelets and necklaces, but if you are not, then skip this part. I like to have my sleeves rolled/ pushed up to show off my bracelet or watch and I usually put my longer chain over top of my turtleneck or sweater so you get a little sparkle, so play around and wear those special pieces on a regular basis and get your money's worth.

Well there it is, layering 101 for chilly winters in Canada! Play in your closet with layers and take a picture and tag it with #letsgetstylishwithrobin to share your snuggly winter fashion vibes and cover yourself up out there!
